Rights Respecting Team
The Rights-respecting groups met yesterday for the first time in the new term.
These are student-led groups that put children’s rights at the center of school life using the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
What They Do:-
Share Student Voice:
Give pupils a direct platform to express opinions on school rules, learning, and well-being (Article 12).
Audit and Monitor:
Check classrooms, playgrounds, and policies to see how well rights are respected and help create school or class charters.
Build Global Awareness:
Educate peers and the local community about social justice, fairness, and the rights of children.
Guide Award Progress:
Help West End work through the Silver, and Gold Award. To raise awareness, some of the group will deliver a whole school assembly to talk about the ABCD and E of rights.
Kind regards
Rights Respecting Group
Making a Difference
As part of our school Resilience program we challenged pupils to do something that would make a positive change for others. Some pupils shared what they did to help the community, with 2 pupils organising and taking part in litter picking and another supporting the local Blood Drive by making “bags for bravery”.
School Summer Fayre
We had a fantastic turn out for our School Fayre this year. It was an extra special one to mark our 150th Anniversary, with lots of support from the local community. We had stalls from lots of local vendors as well as parents and pupils. Primary 6 organised their own stall which was a big hit with their fellow pupils. It was lovely to see so many members of our school and the wider community supporting us.
Eco Group
The Eco group have had busy and productive eco sessions - they have reintroduced Waste Free Wednesdays where pupils and staff should aim to bring snacks that have zero waste, they have also shared our wonderful eco code which gives the whole school a reminder of how to look after our immediate environment and just in case classes forget, each class have been presented with a set of top tips to help them on their ecojourney!
Very well done Eco Group.

Health and Wellbeing Round Up
Here is a quick round up of what the Health and Wellbeing group have got up to this year.
The aim of the group was to promote health and wellbeing and to get voices from P1 through to P7.
We have created some lovely displays to show children how to be safe/be seen, to show how we are doing with recording travel tracker and to encourage active journeys, and our latest one celebrated neurodiversity.
We created a subgroup of WOW Ambassadors who make sure classes do their Travel Tracker recordings, promoted Walk toSchool Week, and who help organise the monthly travel tracker badges.
Our last session for this year was on the 1st May and we ended our sessions by gathering everyone's thoughts on what we had achieved and what they enjoyed. These have been added to our display. We then had some fresh air and time to play, to help our health and wellbeing!!
Thank you to all the children who have been part of our group. We appreciate your the hard work and ideas.

Outdoor Library
Our community group are excited to announce that the Outdoor Library is now ready to use again.
If you’d like a quiet space to read at lunchtime, this is the place for you. As well as reading we also have giant chess and Duplo which can be played with outside the shelter if it’s dry.
We have come up with some rules to remind everyone of how to be respectful and safe in our outdoor library.
Thank you
Play Leaders
On the afternoon of the 27th April, the P6’s and P7’s took charge of the whole school with ‘Play Leaders’. It was a wonderful afternoon with these children leading the learning and presenting, demonstrating and then running a huge range of games.
The Play Leaders have now organised a timetable of these games for breaktimes so that children, who wish to, can join in. It is fantastic seeing the children taking on these leadership roles. Thank you to Active Schools for training us.
Gordon Castle Cross Country
What an amazing team!
A huge congratulations and thank you to the West End runners who represented us so well at Gordon Castle on 21st March.
Everyone was incredible with a fantastic attitude with some stand out performances as well!
Harry came 5th in the P6/7 boys!
Chloe came 1st in the P6/7 girls!
Cameron came for 4th in the P4/5 boys race!
And in the P4/5 girls race we had the best team performance that Mr Greene has ever seen:

Science Week
As part of Science week Primary 5, 6 and 7 enjoyed a range of stem tasks. They had fun with short burst activities which were making a marble run, building card houses of different levels ( winner was 4 levels) and investigating bone structure of birds and how strong they are. The children were engaged and hard working - well done !!
P3 trip to Elgin STEM centre
As part of British Science Week, P3 visited the STEM Centre @ Elgin Library on Tuesday 10th March.
The purpose of the visit was to:-
- Engage with interactive exhibits in the Exploration Zone to foster a sense of wonder.
- Develop critical thinking and logical reasoning skills through interactive, hands-on activities.
- It was a great opportunity to make use of this fantastic learning resource on our doorstep, the class had lots of fun!
- Nirna even built the Titanic using the foam shapes!
- Thank you also to our parent volunteers the trip wouldn’t have been possible without your support.
Success at Floor Curling for West End
On Wednesday 18th February a team from P5 and P6 headed to UHI Moray to learn about Floor Curling and compete against other schools. We all had great fun learning new skills in the morning and then we spent the afternoon competing against all the other schools. Our team did really well and, with all their new skills, won the tournament. Well done to all that took part and represented the school at Floor Curling.
What's under our feet?
Over the last few weeks P5 have been learning about what’s under our feet and have explored the substances that make up the Earth’s surface.
We learned about the layers of the Earth, taking a close look at the crust and demonstrated how different rock types are formed using layers of chocolate!
P5 also enjoyed putting their knowledge to the test by becoming rock detectives and many have been inspired to bring in interesting rocks they found in their own time. So much enthusiasm. Well done P5!
The Community Group
The Community Group have been working on ways to help everyone feel happy and included in the playground.
We are working on 3 things we think will make a difference.
1. Making everyone aware of our “Friendship Stop”
2. Clearing out the shelter to bring back our “Outdoor Library”
3. Making everyone aware of “Quiet Zones” in our playground.
Each class should have a poster to remind children they can go there if they need a friend.
More information to follow about the outdoor library and quiet zones.
Thank you
The Community Group
Waste Free Wednesdays
Some of Eco Group members made a video to share an important message about Waste Free Wednesdays at West End!
To reduce our plastic waste and encourage healthy eating in school, we are re-introducing 'Waste Free Wednesdays'. All pupils are encouraged to bring snacks and lunches that use as little plastic wrapping and waste as possible. This could include, fruits and veggies, and small snacks from home in reusable tubs.
This will run every Wednesday throughout the rest of the school year!
Thank you!

Primary 2's - The Magic Porridge Pot
Over the past few weeks, Primary 2 have been developing their storytelling skills through Talk for Writing during our literacy lessons. We have been focusing on retelling the traditional tale - The Magic Porridge Pot, exploring the key elements of a good story such as characters, setting and sequencing events in the correct order.
To bring our learning to life, the children worked in groups to create and practice their own puppet shows based on the story. They carefully planned how they would retell the beginning, middle and end, thinking about expression, clear voices and how to engage their audience.
Last week the children preformed their puppet shows for the P1 class. They demonstrated fantastic storytelling skills by confidently retelling the story in the correct sequence. I was very impressed with their clear voices, wonderful expression and ability to work collaboratively as a team. The children showed great creativity, confidence and excellent listening skills while supporting one another.
Well done, P2s – you should be very proud of yourselves!
Travel Tracker Badge Design Winners
Thank you to all the children who took the time to design a travel tracker badge as part of the living streets competition.
We have chosen the 3 winning entries to be sent in for West End.
Congratulations to Eleanor in P3, Ethan in P4 and Grace in P7. Their entries now go into the national competition where they have a chance of being chosen as a travel tracker badge design for 2026/27.
Good luck!

World Book Day
On Friday afternoon the Rights Respecting Group learned about World Book Day.
WBD focuses on fostering a love of reading for pleasure, on Friday we paired up older children with younger children to chose a book from our school library and read a book together.
When we came back together as a group we looked at the articles that are linked to World Book Day:-
Key articles and themes for World Book Day:
Article 17 (Information): Children have the right to reliable, understandable information, including books.
Article 29 (Education): Education should develop personality, talents, and abilities.
Article 31 (Culture/Leisure): Children have the right to relax, play, and take part in creative, cultural activities.
On Thursday each class will will take part in activities to celebrate World Book Day and children are encouraged to bring their favourite book to read for pleasure.
Kind regards
Rights Respecting Group
West End Primary School Ceilidh
As part of our 150th Birthday Celebrations we held a Ceilidh in the St Giles Church. The Ceilidh was very well attended with just over 90 people creating a fabulous atmosphere last Friday - Thank you to Rev Deon for the very kind use of St Giles' Church in Elgin, I think everyone there would agree it's a marvellous space and very well suited to our school ceilidh. Thanks again to Mr Greene for his excellent work on the microphone keeping everyone safe and for making the evening as excellent as it was. Finally, thank you to Mrs Dixon and her helpers for all their efforts and getting everything ready for us on the night.
Enjoy the photos attached!
Through ticket sales, some bear squares and the self-service refreshments table we have raised another £200 towards our projects to commemorate the 150th anniversary!
Health and Wellbeing Group
The Health and Wellbeing group enjoyed a visit from Roanna Trerise who works for the charity Living Streets. She came to talk to us about making active journeys to school and how we can improve our mental and physical health by getting out in the fresh air. She then worked with a focus group who volunteered to be WOW Ambassadors. Their role will include being responsible for travel tracker recording and planning class or school activities to get everyone moving.
We also found out about the competition that has opened to design senses themed travel tracker badges for next year so the rest of the pupil group started their design entries. The competition is open to all pupils.
Rights Respecting Pupil Group
At West End Primary school we believe that our pupils play a crucial part in school improvement. In order for pupil voice to be embedded into our school improvement strategy we provide opportunities for all pupils to be involved in the self evaluation, planning and decision

Scot's Week
We all enjoyed listening to our school community perform Scottish poems and songs. I am sure you will enjoy listening to them on Class Dojo. There were lots of confident indivduals who all performed really well. Congratulations to all the children who stood up in front of the school and well done to you all for learning a Scottish poem or song.
Travel Tracker Leader-board
At West End we take part in the Living Streets travel tracker scheme which records how the children travel to school. The Health and Wellbeing pupil voice group created a lovely display about this. The children who recorded their active journeys received their December badges today. The challenge from Living Streets for this term is to get our engagement, recording journeys, to match our % of active journeys. Can we do it?
Congratulations to P5 who are at the top of the Leader-board.
Happy New Year
We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and have enjoyed a nice break with family and friends. What a strange start it has been to the new term! With all the bad weather and poor conditions the school had to be closed for 3 days. Although the snow caused disruption it created an opportunity for some beautiful photos. Please enjoy the ones of the school.
Health and Wellbeing Group
The Health and Wellbeing pupil group worked hard to create a corridor display about active travel to school and being safe and seen in the winter months.
We now have a leader board for active journeys which we record on Travel Tracker each day. If the children make enough active journeys they get a badge at the end of the month too.
Primary 7 all set for the Christmas Fair
Primary 7 are all set and feeling full of festive cheer as we get ready to welcome you later on!
Primary 1
Primary One had a very exciting message from an unknown sender today. This discovery prompted lots of letter writing which included sounds, numbers, and special symbols all in hope of discovering who our secret letter writer could be! We can’t wait to see the replies that appear in our letterbox tomorrow.
Activities like this inspire a love of writing and give meaning to the shapes that we put onto paper.
Primary 3 Enterprise
Lots of great teamwork in Primary 3 making posters to advertise our Enterprise Stall at the Christmas Fair. Primary 3 have been working really hard to make products that they are going to sell.
Active School Parkrun
A big shout out and well done to everyone who took part in the Active Schools Parkrun Participation League on Sunday 30th November.

We are climbing that league table!
We had 8 runners from West End but not sure we claimed all 8 of our points. It would be great if everyone could check they are signed up through Active Schools to collect points for all your efforts.
Eco Group
Well done to some of our Eco group who delivered our school eco code to the whole school. They have also been busy making posters for each class so that the whole school knows the code and can use it around the school so that we can all do our bit for our school environment.
Primary 5 - Music Makers
Primary 5 have enjoyed music sessions to create their Winter themed sound story. After exploring sound with different percussion instruments, they chose which ones would represent their stories. The groups communicated and supported each other throughout the sessions making sure everyone’s ideas were heard and included and came up with some fantastic pieces which they performed to their classmates . FANTASTIC work P5!
Primary 7 Trip to Elgin Academy
Primary 7 enjoyed their first transition visit to Elgin Academy yesterday. They visited the library and met Mrs Toonen the school librarian. Mrs Toonen read them some poetry and the pupils created their own based on 'The Magical Box'. They then has some time to explore the library and found lots of interesting books!
Worry Monster
Our school resilience work this term is looking at Talking It Out and not holding on to worries. As part of this we have reading the Big Bag of Worrie and have been talking about Worry Monsters. Look at the amazing one Ethan in P4 designed and then made with his family!! Mrs Moore can confirm that “Monsty” is just as cuddly as he looks! Well done Ethan!
Remembrance and Poppies
On Remembrance Day, we think about the people who have helped to keep our country safe. We remember their bravery, dedication and kindness. The poppy is a special flower that grows in the fields where soldiers once fought. It reminds us to be thankful and to hope for peace. When we see or make poppies, we are showing that we remember.
Primary 4 have put together a lovely display for the front of our school.
Thank you to the Junior House Captains for going round the classes last week selling Poppies for Poppy Scotland.
Exhibition Celebrating 150 Years of West End Primary
It was great to see so many visitors to our 150th exhibition which was on after school during the last 3 days of term - 2 of them being our former head-teachers of West End - Mr Barron and Mrs Cromar. Current pupils and their families, former pupils and friends of the school also came along to see the old photos and artefacts. Each class had researched a time period since West End opened in 1875 and their work was displayed around the hall. It was really interesting meeting former pupils who had lots of fascinating and funny stories to share of school life in the past. Did you know the canteen used to be in the P7 / library area of the school? Did you know our Admin office has moved many times, the office used to be a wet cloakroom space and be part of Mrs Moore’s room. The toilets used to be in the courtyard – not very pleasant in the winter! Mrs Cromar’s daughter was the successful winner of the 2nd West End Bear.
Harvest Thanksgiving
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the parents and families for your generous Harvest Thanksgiving donations. Your kindness and support truly embody the spirit of our Rights Respecting School (RRS) Award, particularly the right of every child to food and wellbeing (Article 27). Through your contributions, we are not only celebrating the season of harvest but also showing our values of kindness and respect for others in our community. Your contributions make a huge difference to those less fortunate and who may be struggling at this time.
Maths Week 22nd -26th September
Primary 5 - Maths Challenge
We looked at real life maths links as well as doing the Edinburgh Zoo Wild Maths challenge each day to collect letters for a code.
We also had the video lesson about the origins and types of things used for money – including tea, shells and salt. This was from Museum on the Mound in Edinburgh.
Primary 2 - Estimation
This week for Maths week Primary 2 took part in a daily estimation challenge where they had to guess the number of items in the jar. This led to great discussions around the sense of number, understanding quantities and sizes. The children also used skills like problem solving, logical reasoning and communication skills.
